I caught one of our Lake Waco eagles flying by this past weekend and got a shot of her. Even though I have thousands of pictures of them, it just seems I can’t get enough. On a positive note, we expect a good year for nesting and look forward to them laying some eggs and successfully raising some young eagles.

No Eagles Yet, Only Pelicans

We went out again today for a quick check on the eagles and they aren’t around the nest mid-day. People are seeing them early and late in the day so that’s encouraging. I found the White Pelicans again and it seems so unusual to find them here in the winter. Since we aren’t viewing the eagles yet, I will continue to enjoy the pelicans as long as they stay around.

Harrier Hawks Working the Wetlands Area

I went out to the Lake Waco Wetlands today and found lots of waterfowl and several Harrier Hawk working the reeds and the surrounding banks near the water. This old boy dove down several times but I never saw a successful catch. He kept at it though, even as the sun started setting lower than I wanted to stay.

Waxing Moon with Jupiter Nearby

I went out back to the lake the other night for a walk and noticed how close Jupiter had gotten to the moon during this phase and just had to capture the pair. They don’t come too much closer than this as well as I remember. You may have noticed it yourself that evening. I got several calls about it as the night progressed.

Pelicans Wintering on Lake Waco

I found this small flock of White Pelicans resting on a log on the lake the other afternoon. They are a beautiful bird and it is fabulous that we always have a few wintering over here on our lake. They are so striking with their bright white feathers, brilliant orange feet, and large pink and yellow beaks. These were some mature birds of at least 4 years old since you could see the development of the nuptial peduncle on the tops of their beaks for the mating season. Legend has it that only the males have the raised protrusion on their beaks but in reality all mature adults display this during nesting time and then it falls off.
